What does Sweet Meat Squash Taste like?
Sweet meat squash has a sweet, earthy flavor with hints of honey and spice. It is often described as having a creamy texture which makes it perfect for roasting or baking! Additionally, its sweetness is enjoyable when eaten raw as well. When cooked, the natural sugars in the flesh caramelize and bring out even more flavor. Sweet meat squash pairs well with other vegetables, herbs, spices and dairy products.
Choose A Ripe Sweet Meat Squash
Before you buy a sweet meat squash, it’s important to make sure the one you are getting is ripe. Look for a squash that has a deep orange color and the skin should feel tough but not hard. If there are any wrinkles or soft spots present on the squash, then it is past its prime. Also check for cuts and bruises, which indicate that the squash has been mishandled. You want one that is heavy for its size, as this usually indicates a higher sugar content and a sweet flavor. If you can’t find any ripe ones in the store, try ordering online or look for farmers markets nearby that sell them freshly harvested.
To determine the ripeness of your squash, simply press the rind with your thumbnail. If it’s easy for you to push through then there is more maturing needed; however, if only a dent appears and no further penetration can take place, that means it is ready to be harvested! Enjoy its delicious flavor or store away for future enjoyment.
Are you worried about harvesting your pumpkins and squash too soon? If a hard frost is on the horizon, then don’t fret! Even if they haven’t fully ripened yet, rest assured that these fruits can still mature once off the vine.
