What Is The Original Grilled Cheese?

For centuries, humanity has been teaming up bread and cheese, a fact corroborated by food history scholars. Even ancient Roman cookbooks recommended uniting the two ingredients at mealtimes! In contrast to just serving them together, combining cheese and bread in one dish is a more current development.

Yet. the scrumptious grilled cheese sandwich we are familiar with today is believed to have originated in America during the roaring twenties. It appears someone creative had an insight to make a grilled cheese sandwich, but it seemed everyone wanted a piece of this delicious treat shortly after as individuals started making them for themselves at home or purchasing them from vendors.

Grilled cheese originated as an open-faced sandwich with grated American cheese, which often featured additional toppings such as tomatoes, eggs, pineapple and bacon. Seeking to make it a more substantial dish for their diners, folks eventually took the initiative to put two slices of bread together to form a complete sandwich.

What Is The Secret To a Good Grilled Cheese Sandwich?

Craving the perfect grilled cheese sandwich? The secret is simple – softened butter! This helps the wheat bread slices to toast evenly and gives them a beautiful golden-brown color. The butter also serves as a barrier against the cheese, preventing it from leaking out of the sandwich while cooking.

For a savory and golden, crispy crust, be sure to spread your butter or mayonnaise generously on both sides of the bread before grilling. You’ll want to make sure that you use softened butter rather than cold if you don’t want it tearing apart your bread! For an even better flavor and smoke point – opt for using mayonnaise instead!

  • 1/2 lb block yellow American cheese, optional
  • 4 tabllespoon salted butter, softened

Instructions

  • Preheat your grill or griddle to medium heat.
  • Shred the white American cheese. We reccomend use appr. 1/4 cup for each sandwich, but it’s up to your how much cheese you want to put.
  • If you want more taste and flavour, shred some yellow American cheese.
  • Generously spread softened unsalted butter onto the outside of both slices of bread for a pleasant buttery flavor.
  • Layer shredded white cheese between four slices of bread. Repeat this process with yellow cheese on the remaining four slices. After closing each sandwich, generously spread butter to both sides for an extra bit of flavor.
  • Place the sandwiches on the grill with the lid on. If you're usin a griddle, cover them with a metal bowl to achieve an appetizing golden brown shade in only 2-3 minutes.
  • Flip the sandwiches over and cook until a golden brown hue is achieved, with melted cheese oozing from inside. This should take around 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Replace from the grill. Eat immediately.

Usefull Tips

  1. Spread The Butter Generously. Slather softened butter over your bread slices for an even, golden crust. Add softened butter to the bread slices instead of the pan. This will help you achieve an even golden crust.
  2. Use Block Cheese. Don’t settle for a pre-shredded cheese; instead, grate your own cheddar from an entire block of cheese! Freshly grated cheese stands out with an incomparable texture and flavor.
  3. Use Cheese That Melts Well. American Cheese is the perfect melting option for the classical grill cheese sandwich! But if you’d like a more intense flavor, young Cheddar works great as well. Or if you’re feeling adventurous and would like to try something different, go for one of the soft or semi-soft cheeses – their high moisture content makes them ideal for becoming perfectly melted!
  4. Avoid Soft Breads such as Wonder Bread if you want a sandwich that won’t be flimsy – opt for thicker-cut varieties instead.
  5. Press The Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Once you have placed the grilled cheese sandwich on the pan, use a spatula to press down delicately. This will cause butter and cheese to seep into each slice of bread, providing an even more tantalizing flavor and an attractive golden brown crust!
